Studio Rik ten Velden

Studio Rik ten Velden is  based in Leiden, the Netherlands. Rik graduated in Furniture Design at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), The Hague in 2009.
The designs are based on research and experimentation with materials and manufacturing techniques. The studio aims to express the beauty of materials through clear-cut forms with a focus on the relation between the applied materials.

Sisu light sculptures are ambient wall pieces that combine cast resin frames with multiple front materials. 3 models have been developed with an emphasis on round and flowing outlines. This takes into account the integration of the LED light. The cast resin lightweight frame is created from a mould that can be reused infinitely with durability in mind. The results are fluid shapes with multiple fronts to choose from. The designs of the Sisu light sculptures are born in times when most of us are challenged in one way or the other. When Rik came across the Finnish term ‘Sisu’ it resonated with his new concept of lights. Sisu is translated as strength of will, determination, and perseverance. According to Rik one way of achieving your goals is to find a balance between fluidity and persistence. We move within the rigid walls of everyday routine and forget that life is not a box but a fluid energy. With its misaligned shapes, Sisu reminds us that life can be colourful and playful.
