Diederik Schneemann

Overview

Diederik Schneeman

Diederik Schneemann’s latest collection, Lucky Dice, is an exploration of luck—its existence, its elusiveness, and its potential to be captured. Schneemann brings this abstract concept into physical form by constructing furniture from dice. By throwing thousands of dice in his atelier, only those that land on a six—the number symbolizing good fortune—are used to build tables, mirrors, and candelabras. Each object becomes a talisman of sorts, imbued with the ‘captured’ luck. The resulting designs not only reflect craftsmanship but also aim to pass on this luck to whoever acquires the piece.

Cherished Collection
In his Cherished project, Schneemann explores the sentimentality of discarded, personal collections. Inspired by objects that people have lovingly accumulated over decades—cigar bands, postcards, smurfs, perfume bottles—he repurposes these nostalgic items into new design pieces. By integrating these collections into his work, he transforms them into unique design objects, imbuing them with a deeper sense of value, not through expensive materials, but through emotional resonance.

Rubdish Collection
Rubdish is a conceptual series Schneemann developed in collaboration with photographer Aldwin van Krimpen. In this project, waste collected from Rotterdam’s streets and shores is reimagined into appetizing “dishes,” elevating trash to an artistic medium. Through three stages—documenting the waste, categorizing it into a palette, and transforming it into a dish—Schneemann critiques consumerism while pushing the boundaries of food design. The project culminates in visually striking photographs of these "meals" made entirely of garbage, challenging our notions of waste and consumption.

3D Mash-Up Icons
In 3D Mash-up, Schneemann questions the concept of intellectual property and ownership in design. By sampling iconic designs from masters such as Gerrit Rietveld and Charles and Ray Eames, he creates new objects that blend various famous design elements into something entirely original. These eclectic pieces, while honoring the originals, also pose questions about the boundaries of creative ownership and the value of remixing in the digital age.

A Flip-Flop Story
This collection tells the narrative of worn, discarded flip-flops that wash ashore on the beaches of Eastern Africa. These flip-flops, having traveled far and wide, are collected and transformed into sustainable design objects. Schneemann's work gives new life to these once-forgotten items, transforming them into meaningful pieces that capture the history and wear of their long journey.

Artistic Legacy
Schneemann’s work reflects a deep engagement with sustainability, memory, and storytelling. His objects transcend pure aesthetics, often carrying with them the histories of their materials, whether that be discarded flip-flops or long-cherished collections. Through his innovative use of materials and his conceptual depth, Schneemann continues to expand the boundaries of Dutch design.
