Natasja Alers
Natasja Alers
Visual artist Natasja Alers (The Hague, 1987), graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, specializes in ceramics and lives and works in Amsterdam, NL.
In her artistic practice, tactility and physicality take center stage. With a visual language marked by raw expression and sensuality, she channels themes such as touch, sexuality, and feminism into her sculptures. She applies a variety of techniques, such as making plaster casts of diverse human body parts, which she then assembles into new sculptural forms—vases made from nipple or toe casts, wall sculptures, seating objects, and larger than live sculptures.
Color and glaze are also vital elements in her work. She treats the unglazed surface of the sculpture as a bare canvas, approaching it as if it were a painting. With a wide palette of colors and painterly techniques, she attacks the “naked” form, sometimes layering as many as seven or eight different glazes, applying them in an intuitive and expressive manner until a lively, layered skin emerges that truly brings the work to life. The glaze functions as a tangible skin, giving her sculptures not only a visual but also a physical presence.
Natasja Alers x Alfhild Külper
Swedish Textile artist Alfhild Külper and ceramic artist Natasja Alers are bringing their creative worlds together. Soft, matte and formable with hard, shiny and fragile. A dreamscape object made in collaboration. With hints of blossoms and corals. Intuition and life. Showing the beauty of complexity and bringing the healing elements of nature into our homes.
Exhibitions
The work of Alers has been selected for several ceramic art prizes; showcased at Design Museum Den Bosch, ARTZUID Sculpture Biennale Amsterdam, PAN Amsterdam, and other international exhibitions and art fairs in cities such as Los Angeles, Berlin, Brussels, Antwerp, and Copenhagen.-
