Martha Scheeren

Martha Scheeren is a Dutch visual artist whose work explores the relationship between painting, light, and spatial perception. Based in the Netherlands, her practice moves between image and environment, focusing on how colour and luminosity shape the experience of space.
Her work is characterized by a subtle and restrained visual language. Through carefully layered surfaces and controlled use of colour, Scheeren creates compositions that shift between abstraction and atmosphere. Rather than depicting fixed forms, her works evoke sensory experiences, where light and colour become the primary elements.
A central aspect of her practice is the investigation of light as both subject and material. Her works often appear to emit or absorb light, creating a sense of depth that extends beyond the surface. This approach results in images that change depending on the viewer’s position and the surrounding conditions, reinforcing the connection between artwork and environment.
Scheeren’s compositions are marked by a sense of stillness and concentration. Through minimal means, she constructs spaces that invite slow looking and heightened awareness. The absence of overt narrative allows the viewer to engage directly with the visual and spatial qualities of the work, creating a contemplative and immersive experience.
Her practice reflects an ongoing exploration of how painting can extend beyond the canvas, engaging with architectural space and perception. By working at the intersection of image and environment, Scheeren creates works that are both precise and open, where subtle shifts in colour and light produce lasting impact.
