Daniela Bergschneider

Biography

Daniela Bergschneider is an artist whose work explores the relationship between textile and ceramics through sculptural form. Her practice focuses on the creation of hybrid objects that blur boundaries between body, material, and abstraction. Through these works, she develops a visual language that moves between the familiar and the unfamiliar, where organic and constructed elements coexist.

Central to Bergschneider’s practice is the combination of porcelain and textile. Working with hand-formed porcelain elements and semi-transparent, hand-dyed nylon, she constructs complex structures that suggest both fragility and strength. These materials, commonly associated with everyday use, are transformed into sculptural compositions that challenge their conventional perception.

Her process is highly labor-intensive and modular. Individual porcelain elements are created by hand and then connected through textile structures, allowing larger forms to emerge through repetition and accumulation. This method results in works that appear both structured and fluid, where the relationship between parts and whole remains visible.

A defining aspect of her work is the tension between hard and soft materials. Porcelain elements evoke associations with bone or internal structure, while the textile functions as a skin-like surface that holds and connects the form. Together, these components create sculptures that suggest a sense of corporeality, extending beyond the human body toward more abstract, universal forms.

Bergschneider’s work is guided by the concept of “visual tactility,” where surface, texture, and form are used to evoke a sensory response. Her sculptures often appear to be in a state of subtle movement, as if expanding or contracting, creating an impression of vitality. Through this approach, she invites the viewer to engage not only visually, but also physically and emotionally with the work.

Her practice reflects an ongoing investigation into how material can communicate sensation and presence. By combining precision with experimentation, she develops works that occupy a space between object and organism, where perception and imagination are closely intertwined.
