Tiemen Harder

Biography

Tiemen Harder is a Dutch designer whose practice explores the relationship between material, process, and time. A graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven, his work is grounded in a sensitivity to natural rhythms and cyclical systems, approaching design as a process of gradual development rather than a fixed outcome. His objects emerge through a method that values attention, repetition, and transformation.

Central to Harder’s practice is the idea of making as a form of cultivation. Drawing inspiration from ecological processes, he treats ideas as evolving entities that unfold over time. This approach results in works that reflect a sense of growth and continuity, where each piece carries traces of its development and the conditions under which it was made.

His process is exploratory and open-ended, often embracing irregularity and imperfection. Rather than working toward a predetermined result, Harder allows material and process to guide the outcome. This method challenges conventional design approaches that prioritize control and efficiency, instead emphasizing patience, intuition, and responsiveness.

Working primarily with ceramics, alongside wood and drawing, Harder engages with materials in a direct and tactile way. Clay plays a central role within his practice, functioning as both medium and collaborator. Through handling, shaping, and repetition, the material responds to gesture and presence, allowing each object to retain a record of its making.

Alongside this process-driven approach, Harder creates objects that retain a functional dimension, including lighting and table-based works. These pieces occupy a space between art and interior design, where usability and expression coexist. Rather than separating function from form, his work integrates both, resulting in objects that are at once practical and contemplative.

His work can be understood as a reflection on attention and material awareness. By slowing down the process of production, Harder creates objects that invite a more considered interaction, where form, surface, and structure remain closely connected to the act of making itself. In this way, his practice positions design as an ongoing dialogue between intention, material, and time, contributing to a broader conversation on the intersection of art and design.
