Dirk Jensma

Dirk Jensma is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is defined by precision, repetition, and a sustained engagement with pattern. Born in Gaasterland, the Netherlands, he currently lives and works in Sóller, Mallorca. His practice reflects a gradual shift from an international career in the fashion industry to a focused exploration of painting and drawing.
Before dedicating himself fully to his artistic practice, Jensma worked as a makeup artist for leading fashion publications such as Vogue and ELLE, collaborating with international brands including Chanel and Fendi. During this period, he developed a disciplined, detail-oriented approach, using moments between assignments to draw and embroider. This early engagement with textile techniques, particularly embroidery, continues to inform his visual language.
Embroidery has played a central role in shaping his approach for more than fifteen years. The logic of the grid, the repetition of gesture, and the precision required in needlework translate directly into his paintings. His compositions are constructed through carefully structured systems of lines, sequences, and colour relationships, resulting in works that appear both controlled and fluid.
Jensma’s paintings often unfold as complex, rhythmic structures. Straight lines and repeated motifs form patterns that suggest movement and expansion, creating a visual experience that is at once methodical and immersive. While grounded in a systematic approach, the works retain a sense of organic development, where intuition operates within a defined framework.
The tension between control and freedom is central to his practice. Through sustained repetition and meticulous execution, Jensma develops surfaces that invite prolonged viewing, revealing subtle shifts in colour, density, and structure. His work reflects an ongoing exploration of how disciplined processes can generate forms that feel both ordered and alive.
Living and working in Mallorca, his environment continues to influence the rhythm and atmosphere of his work, reinforcing his interest in the relationship between human-made systems and natural patterns.
