Chris Rijk

Chris Rijk is a Dutch visual artist and ceramicist whose work explores the relationship between tradition, identity, and contemporary culture. His practice is rooted in ceramics, where he reinterprets established techniques and visual languages through a personal and often playful perspective. He graduated cum laude from HKU University of the Arts Utrecht in 2017.

A defining aspect of Rijk’s work is his engagement with the visual tradition of Delft Blue ceramics. Drawing from this historically loaded style, he introduces contemporary imagery and narratives that shift its meaning and context. By combining traditional craftsmanship with present-day themes, he creates works that challenge expectations while maintaining a strong connection to the medium’s history.

His work frequently addresses themes of identity and sexuality, incorporating elements that are both direct and suggestive. Through this approach, Rijk expands the narrative potential of ceramics, using decoration not only as ornament but as a carrier of meaning. The contrast between the familiar aesthetic of Delftware and the contemporary content creates a tension that is central to his practice.

Rijk also extends the use of ceramics beyond conventional forms. In addition to plates and vases, he develops objects that question the functional and cultural boundaries of the medium. These works retain a sense of humor and experimentation, while reflecting a considered approach to form, surface, and context.

His practice reflects an ongoing dialogue between craft and concept. By working within a recognizable tradition while introducing new subject matter and forms, Rijk repositions ceramics within a contemporary framework, where historical references and personal expression intersect.
