Beppe Kessler
Beppe Kessler is a Dutch visual artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, and contemporary jewellery. Born in Amsterdam in 1952, she lives and works in the Netherlands. Her work is defined by an experimental approach to material, in which process, transformation, and tactility play a central role.
Kessler’s practice is rooted in a deep engagement with material. Working with wood, stone, linen, and paint, she explores the limits and possibilities of each medium. Rather than treating materials as passive carriers, she actively intervenes: breaking, stretching, sanding, piercing, and reshaping them. This process-driven approach results in works that carry visible traces of their making, where surface and structure are inseparable.
In her paintings, the canvas itself becomes an active component. Kessler manipulates the surface before and during the painting process, altering its physical properties and allowing irregular forms to emerge. These works often take on a distinctive, undulating quality, where the boundary between image and object becomes fluid. The result is a body of work that resists flatness, emphasizing depth, texture, and physical presence.
Her work in jewellery is closely connected to her painterly practice. The same sensitivity to material, form, and transformation informs both disciplines, creating a dialogue between object and image. Through this relationship, Kessler positions jewellery not only as adornment but also as a sculptural and conceptual medium.
Across her work, there is a consistent exploration of tension, between control and chance, fragility and strength, surface and structure. This approach reflects a sustained investigation into how materials behave, change, and carry meaning, situating her practice within a broader discourse on materiality and artistic process.
