Signe Emdal

Guest Artist at Rademakers Gallery
Signe Emdal is a visual artist whose practice is rooted in textile, sculpture, and spatial intervention. Working primarily with weaving, she approaches the medium as a system through which structure, material, and sensory experience intersect. Her work engages with themes of memory, perception, and environment, drawing from textile traditions, architectural thinking, and an intuitive understanding of space.
Central to Emdal’s practice is the idea of weaving as a process of translation, where material becomes a carrier of experience. Her works are developed directly on the loom, without preparatory sketches or fixed compositions. Instead, she works through a method she describes as an “energy dialogue,” allowing form to emerge through a continuous interaction between body, material, and surroundings. This process results in works that remain open, responsive, and closely connected to the conditions in which they are made.
Light, space, and location play an important role in her practice. Working in natural-light environments, Emdal allows architectural structures and surrounding landscapes to influence the development of each piece. This site-responsive approach situates her work within a broader exploration of how textile can function beyond surface, operating as spatial and atmospheric form.
Her ongoing body of work, referred to as the Medium series, reflects a long-term investigation into structure and material. Using wool as a primary medium, she builds on traditional techniques while reconfiguring them through a fluid and experimental process. These works combine references to historical textile constructions with a forward-looking approach, resulting in forms that appear both grounded and evolving.
In addition to weaving, Emdal incorporates other material and visual elements into her practice, including analogue photography and principles related to transparency and light. This expansion of media further reinforces her interest in layering, perception, and the passage of time within material form.
Her work reflects a sustained engagement with textile as both a technical discipline and a conceptual framework, positioning weaving as a dynamic and contemporary mode of artistic expression.
