Diederik Schneemann

Diederik Schneemann is a Dutch designer and artist whose work explores the relationship between material, memory, and value. Born in Hasselt, Belgium, and raised in Maastricht, he is based in the Netherlands. His practice operates across design, photography, and installation, combining a conceptual approach with a strong focus on material transformation.
Schneemann’s work is defined by the reuse and reinterpretation of existing objects. He is drawn to materials that carry a sense of history—items that reflect personal attachment, cultural meaning, or collective memory. By altering their context and function, he transforms these objects into new compositions, creating works that move beyond their original purpose.
A central aspect of his practice is the exploration of sustainability, not only in terms of material reuse but also through the preservation of intangible value. His works often incorporate discarded or overlooked objects, which are reassembled into new forms that highlight their emotional and narrative potential. Through this process, Schneemann questions conventional ideas of worth, proposing alternative ways of understanding value in both material and cultural terms.
His Cherished project exemplifies this approach. Within this ongoing series, Schneemann works with personal collections—such as cigar bands, matchboxes, perfume bottles, or figurines—that have been accumulated over time. These objects, often modest in material value, are transformed into new design pieces that emphasize the dedication, sentiment, and history embedded within them. By reconfiguring these collections, he creates works that preserve their original meaning while introducing new interpretations.
Schneemann’s practice spans multiple disciplines, including object design, photography, and installation. His projects often emerge from a process of observation and discovery, where the material itself suggests direction and form. This approach results in works that balance conceptual clarity with visual presence, inviting reflection on the relationship between past and present, use and meaning.
His debut solo presentation, A Flip Flop Story, was shown during Milan Design Week in 2011, marking the beginning of an ongoing body of work that continues to evolve through series such as 3-D Mash Up, Rubbish, and Cherished. Across these projects, Schneemann maintains a consistent focus on transformation, storytelling, and the redefinition of everyday materials.
