Biografie

I am trying to create something that is of an informal sublime beauty.«

Kim Simonsson is a Finnish sculptor whose work explores the boundaries of ceramics through material transformation and narrative form. His practice is defined by the creation of figurative sculptures that combine traditional craftsmanship with a distinctive and highly recognizable surface treatment. Through this approach, he repositions ceramic sculpture within a contemporary context.

A defining element of Simonsson’s work is his development of a moss-like surface, created using nylon fiber applied to ceramic forms. This technique gives his sculptures a tactile and almost living quality, transforming the material into something that appears organic and otherworldly. The resulting figures often take the form of children or animals, rendered at human scale and presented with a quiet, introspective presence.

His work is characterized by a subtle tension between familiarity and estrangement. While the figures are recognizable, they exist within an imagined, parallel world, drawing from references such as folklore, fairy tales, and visual culture. This combination creates narratives that remain open-ended, where the viewer is invited to interpret the emotional and symbolic dimensions of the work.

Simonsson’s sculptures often evoke a sense of stillness, where gesture and posture suggest inner states rather than action. The contrast between the softness of the surface and the solidity of the ceramic core reinforces this duality, contributing to the atmosphere of ambiguity that surrounds his figures.

Through his practice, Simonsson expands the possibilities of ceramic sculpture, combining technical precision with a strong narrative sensibility. His work reflects an ongoing exploration of material, surface, and storytelling, positioning his sculptures within a broader dialogue on contemporary figurative art.
