Sofie Aaldering

Sofie Aaldering (b. 1998, The Netherlands) is a contemporary textile artist based in Arnhem, the Netherlands. Her practice is defined by a refined exploration of material, structure and form, transforming delicate textiles into sculptural works of striking physical presence. Through a highly meticulous, entirely hand-executed process, Aaldering gives new depth and permanence to materials traditionally associated with softness, transparency and fragility.

Working primarily with tulle, mesh and layered textile structures, Aaldering develops tactile compositions that move between wall object, relief and sculpture. Her works are built through repetition, tension and manipulation, allowing translucent materials to accumulate into dense, organic forms. The result is a visual language in which lightness and volume, delicacy and monumentality, appear in constant dialogue.

Aaldering graduated with honours from the University of the Arts Utrecht in 2021. Since then, her work has gained increasing recognition for its distinctive material sensibility and technical refinement. In 2024, she was featured on the cover of ELLE Decoration as one of the artists to watch, marking an important moment in her early career.

Her three-dimensional textile works invite close looking. From a distance, they command the space through colour, rhythm and form; up close, they reveal intricate surfaces and a deep investment in process. By elevating familiar, often overlooked materials into sculptural compositions, Aaldering expands the possibilities of contemporary textile art and positions her practice within a broader dialogue on craft, material innovation and contemporary design.
