Preta Wolzak

Preta Wolzak is a Dutch artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores the intersection of material, narrative, and social commentary. Working across textile, sculpture, and applied arts, she creates works that combine visual richness with a strong conceptual foundation. Her practice reflects an ongoing engagement with themes such as environmental change, gender, and historical representation.
Wolzak’s work is characterized by a distinctive use of colour and material.
Through the combination of textiles, leather, embroidery, wool, and unconventional elements such as glow-in-the-dark thread, she constructs compositions that are both tactile and visually layered. These materials are not only aesthetic choices but also integral to the narrative content of her work, reinforcing the themes she addresses.
A recurring focus within her practice is the relationship between humanity and the natural world. In works addressing climate change, she creates scenes that juxtapose playful imagery with fragile environments, using visual contrast to reflect on the impact of human activity. By framing these narratives within carefully constructed compositions, she invites reflection on the consequences of consumption and environmental neglect.
In her Fighting Females series, Wolzak shifts her attention to historical narratives, highlighting women whose contributions have often been overlooked. Through textile-based portraits, she reinterprets these figures, combining craft and storytelling to bring attention to their role within broader social and cultural histories. These works reflect her interest in representation and the ways in which stories are preserved and communicated.
Wolzak’s background in design continues to inform her practice. After studying at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, she worked across a range of applied disciplines, including furniture, interiors, and illustration. Since focusing on her autonomous work, she has developed a body of work that moves fluidly between art and design, maintaining a balance between material exploration and conceptual clarity.
Her work demonstrates a sustained commitment to using material as a narrative tool, where texture, colour, and composition contribute to broader reflections on contemporary issues. Through this approach, Wolzak creates works that are both visually engaging and conceptually layered.
