Johannes Langkamp
Johannes Langkamp is a Rotterdam-based artist whose practice focuses on perception, movement, and the experience of space. Born in Steinfurt, Germany, his work operates at the intersection of sculpture, video, and installation, exploring how visual reality can be constructed, disrupted, and reinterpreted.
Central to Langkamp’s practice is an interest in everyday phenomena and the subtle moments that often go unnoticed. By isolating and reconfiguring simple actions or objects, he creates works that challenge habitual ways of seeing. His process is driven by experimentation, where observation and curiosity lead to the development of kinetic systems and visual sequences.
Movement plays a key role in his work. Through kinetic sculptures and video installations, Langkamp investigates how motion can alter perception, creating shifting relationships between object, space, and viewer. His works often balance structure and unpredictability, combining precise systems with elements of chance, resulting in compositions that feel both controlled and dynamic.
A recurring strategy within his practice is the translation of simple “what if” scenarios into physical or visual experiments. By testing the behaviour of materials and actions—such as the movement of a falling object—he creates works that reveal alternative ways of experiencing time and space. These explorations result in installations that invite viewers to engage more attentively with their surroundings.
Langkamp’s work reflects a continuous dialogue between process and outcome. Rather than presenting fixed conclusions, his installations remain open-ended, encouraging observation and interpretation. Through this approach, he positions perception itself as both subject and medium, expanding the boundaries of how reality can be understood and experienced.
