Mae Engelgeer
Mae Engelgeer is a Dutch textile designer recognized for her innovative and refined approach to textile design. Based in the Netherlands, she studied Textile Design at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute and later completed a Master’s in Applied Arts at the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam. Her work reflects a strong commitment to craftsmanship, combined with a contemporary sensibility that positions her within the broader landscape of Dutch design.
Engelgeer’s practice is characterized by a careful balance between colour, material, and structure. Her textiles often feature subtle palettes, geometric compositions, and a nuanced interplay of textures. Soft tones are combined with more vivid accents, creating works that are both visually striking and tactile. Through this approach, she develops pieces that move between functionality and artistic expression.
A key aspect of her work lies in the reinterpretation of traditional weaving techniques. By revisiting and adapting these methods, Engelgeer brings a contemporary perspective to textile production. Her designs are not only functional objects but also autonomous works that emphasize material presence and surface.
Her collections are developed in collaboration with the TextielLab at the TextielMuseum in Tilburg, where she explores the possibilities of advanced textile production. Working with materials such as mohair, merino wool, alpaca, and cotton, she creates textiles that highlight depth, softness, and structural complexity. This combination of technical precision and material sensitivity results in pieces that contribute to both interior spaces and conceptual design contexts.
In addition to her own collections, Engelgeer collaborates with international brands and institutions on a range of projects, including textile products, furniture, and installations. Her work reflects an ongoing interest in the relationship between sustainability, material use, and design, while maintaining a distinct sense of elegance and tactility.
