Historically, when a young bride in Taznakht joined her husband’s household, she faced a year of separation from her family. Only her father could visit, carrying her woven messages (a Rug) to her mother. Through her loom, the bride told her story: each colour and symbol
held meaning. Her mother could read these visual narratives and understand how her daughter was truly faring. Rugs became the language when words could not travel.
Today, this dialogue endures. The symbols, colours, and patterns carry stories that transcend time and distance. With this work, Abouzahra crafted a letter to a loved one celebrating the craft of weaving, symbolising the connection of women across generations.
