Joana Schneider
Joana Schneider
Joana Schneider (*1990, Munich, Germany) is a multidisciplinary artist based in the Netherlands, renowned for her innovative approach to textile art and the integration of sustainable, organic materials. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, where she received the prestigious "Keep an Eye Textile and Fashion Award" in 2018, Schneider crafts immersive, tactile sculptures and installations that blend natural elements with fictional narratives and human experience. Her work explores themes of nature, the human body, and the lasting influence of early experiences on perceptions of beauty and femininity.
Sustainability and Craftsmanship
At the heart of Schneider's practice is a commitment to sustainability. She skillfully repurposes rescued yarn and discarded ropes from the fishing industry, along with organic materials like recycled viscose threads made from plastic bottles, to create her distinctive three-dimensional pieces. Drawing inspiration from Dutch craftsmanship, Schneider incorporates traditional techniques such as netmaking and reed roof thatching. These labor-intensive methods honor local artisans and industries while embodying her dedication to material-based exploration.
Elegance Through Material Innovation
Schneider’s work is characterized by its elegant and feminine forms, often created through an intuitive process of playful experimentation. Her deep love for textile crafts, combined with her inventive use of everyday, recycled materials, transforms the mundane into vibrant, sculptural works. This approach underscores the potential of sustainable design, making her a key figure in the evolving landscape of contemporary art.
Schneider’s work has been exhibited internationally and is featured in prestigious museum collections, further solidifying her influence. In 2025, the artist held her first ever solo exhibition at Groninger Museum (NL). Schneider has been highlighted in the article "What is Textile Art? History, Pioneers & Leading Artists Today" by Julien Delagrange, where she is recognized alongside prominent figures like Fred Sandback, Louise Bourgeois, and Sheila Hicks.
