Sunghee Joe

Overview

Sunghee Joe (*1991, Seoul) is a multidisciplinary artist born and raised in

Seoul, South Korea. She is currently based in The Hague, the Netherlands, and

earned her bachelor’s degree in Interior Architecture and Furniture Design from

the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. Her work focuses on “place,” “space,”

and the “people” within them.

Amid rapid social changes, the values and forms of places and spaces are

constantly shifting, yet she believes that the essence a place should hold remains

an enduring and unshakable quality. This essence is not found in the physical

attributes of a location, but in the interactions between people and place that

emerge through lived experience and long-term relationships. These interactions

and the narratives they reveal form the starting point of her work. Joe visualizes these narratives by combining digital media — including photography and digital painting with traditional, tangible materials, and she intends to continue experimenting with these approaches in her future practice.
