Frits Achten

Biography

Frits Achten is drawn to art forms beyond the realm of Big Art—ethnographic art, art brut, folk art, religious art, and street art. He is especially fascinated by the stories and rituals behind these works, and his sculptures reflect their influence. His pieces are often large, bulky, and organic, yet also magical and expressive.

A deep connection with nature runs through his work. Since childhood, Achten has been captivated by nature’s diversity, the processes of growth and decay, and the hidden order within apparent chaos. These themes continue to shape his artistic vision.

His technique is inspired by nature as well. He builds his sculptures layer by layer, much like a primitive 3D printer—similar to how oyster shells or wasp nests form. Without a frame or skeleton, each piece can evolve freely during its creation. Often, the final form remains unknown until it fully emerges.

Achten works with papier-mâché, using pulp made from newspaper or cardboard, mixed with wallpaper paste and wood glue. The material has the density and structure of clay. Each layer must dry before the next is added—a slow process, but one that yields strong, enduring sculptures with a rich, rough texture.

He studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Tilburg and is based in Eindhoven. His studio is located at Sectie-C, a former industrial site that now houses more than 250 artists and designers. As the largest artist community in the Netherlands, Sectie-C offers a dynamic, creative environment within a city known for its innovation in art, technology, and design.
