Maayke Schuitema

Say Her Name, 2023
4-color Silkscreen on cotton paper

From small villages to the steps of Tehran University in the capital, women lead mass protests. They are at the forefront of these protests, bringing the crowd together by burning their obligatory hijabs (headscarves), cutting their hair and dancing in public. Their immediate cause is Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old college student, who died on September 16 2022 after morality police beat her, apparently for wearing a loose hijab. But their grievances are fueled by four decades of religious strictures that have fallen most heavily on women. Their protests are spreading, fighting the regime starting in 1979 when Khomeini made wearing a hijab (islamic headscarf) mandatory in their workplace.

Maayke Schuitema uses the 'Mahsa symbol' as the centerpiece of her Artwork celebrating March 8, International Women’s Day. In Iran she has become a symbol of the oppressed woman since her death. The world seems to be taking over. Thus, the death of this innocent young woman turns into a movement beyond the control of the government of Iran. ‘Say Here Name’!
